Dr. Roland Tolliver has touched thousands of lives through the weekly column, "For the Love of Community", that appears in the Pulse section of The Journal-Standard of Freeport, Illinois each Thursday since 1999. The column was developed after the editor of the paper read his first book, which he edited, compiled and co-wrote with his friend and collaborator, Dr. Stephen Spyrison. They have donated over $10,000 to charities from the sales of that book, For the Love of Community: Life Lessons from a Small Town, which was published in 1997.
Dr. Tolliver is a full_time, board_certified podiatric surgeon and is owner of Freeport Podiatry Services, LLC. He has been active in his community since moving to Northwest Illinois in 1990. He was one of the coordinators of Kids Kastle Playground, which won an Illinois Governor's Hometown award. He has served in various capacities in Kiwanis International, including as Lt. Governor of the Illinois_Eastern Iowa District. He is a member of the Lincoln_Douglas Kiwanis Club in Freeport. Dr. Tolliver also received a Stephenson County Quality of Life Award in 2003. He is a past member of the National Speakers Association and the Illinois Speakers Association. He presents programs as diverse as goal_setting to overcoming adversity for groups from the AVID program at Freeport Junior High School to Hospice of Northwest Illinois. He has made presentations on writing and publishing for the Illinois Speakers Association and for writing workshops. His medical presentations are directed to audiences of medical professionals, general audiences and community organizations. His topics include, diabetic foot care, arthritis and the foot, and running, dance, and various sports and their related injuries. Dr. Tolliver and his wife, Irena, live in Freeport, Illinois with their five children.
